REVIEW: Grave Ransom by Kalayna Price

*Thank you to Netgalley & Penguin Books for an ARC in exchange for a fair review*

Grave witch Alex Craft is no stranger to the dead talking. She raises shades, works with ghosts, and is dating Death himself. But the dead walking? That’s not supposed to happen. And yet, reanimated corpses are committing crimes across Nekros City.

Alex’s investigation leads her deep into a web of sinister magic. When Briar Darque of the Magical Crimes Investigation Bureau gets involved, Alex finds herself with an unexpected ally of sorts. But as the dead continue to rise and wreak havoc on the living, can Alex get to the soul of the matter in time?

This was a fantastic, detailed and exciting urban fantasy read building on the standalone story but also on the world-building and character struggles of the previous books in the series.  I love Alex. She's smart, kick-ass and funny but there is also a vulnerability to her as she explores more of her magic while also balancing the limitations set upon her by her grave magic.

Her love life continues to be complicated and one scene in particular made my heart break. I'm excited to see what might be in store for future books.

REVIEW: Grave Visions by Kalayna Price

Alex Craft is finally back in this fourth installment to this awesome urban fantasy series!

Life is looking pretty complicated for Alex. Sure, she's finding work as a grave witch, asked to call forth the dead for questioning, whether by the police or other agencies but since learning that she's not altogether human, things have gotten bizarre. Not only is her love life confusing but Alex is fading like any Fae not directly tethered to a specific court. She has some hefty decisions to make soon or it isn't going to be pretty.

Alex just might find a solution to her problem if she can find some answers for the Winter Queen following a rather gruesome murder wrecking havoc in the Faerie realm.  Coincidentally, this turns out to be connected to Nekros City deaths involving a glamour-induced drug causing hallucinations to manifest with deadly repercussions.

This is a nice addition to the series and one that I have been anticipating for far too long.  After quite a long lull since book 3, Grave Memory, I'm so pleased to see Price and her characters back in action. This is an exciting mystery thriller with plenty of magic and a few super creepy moments. I love the creativity illuminated by strong writing.

I adore the blending of worlds throughout these books.  Price showcases urban fantasy world-building at its best.  The nuances of grave magic and its consequences are really interesting but I am fascinated by how the author incorporates Fae lore to further develop this elaborate landscape in which Alex must navigate and explore her lineage and powers.

Alex is kick ass, funny but also flawed and vulnerable.  I think this endears her to readers.  I'm definitely a fan of the love triangle between Alex, Falin and Death but was pretty surprised by her father's revelation and how that complicates Alex's future. Overall, this was fantastic.  If you haven't discovered the series yet, please check it out!
