Highlighted Reviews--Catching up 2017

A year ago, Millie lost her legs and her filmmaking career in a failed suicide attempt. Just when she's sure the credits have rolled on her life story, she gets a second chance with the Arcadia Project: a secret organization that polices the traffic to and from a parallel reality filled with creatures straight out of myth and fairy tales.

For her first assignment, Millie is tasked with tracking down a missing movie star who also happens to be a nobleman of the Seelie Court. To find him, she'll have to smooth-talk Hollywood power players and uncover the surreal and sometimes terrifying truth behind the glamour of Tinseltown. But stronger forces than just her inner demons are sabotaging her progress, and if she fails to unravel the conspiracy behind the noble's disappearance, not only will she be out on the streets, but the shattering of a centuries-old peace could spark an all-out war between worlds.

This was an AMAZING first in series by recommendation of a close friend. What I loved about this book was the authentic characterization plus the inventive twist on fae-lore connected to our world.  All of the characters are fascinating and well depicted, making the reader want to know more about them and follow their journeys.

Heir to Lund Enterprises and ladies’ man Jensen “The Rocket” Lund has three conditions when it comes to dating:
1) No single mothers
2) No cheerleaders
3) No medical personnel
So it makes no sense that he’s wildly attracted to Rowan Michaels, who breaks all three.

Rowan Michaels didn’t pass the rigorous requirements to become an athletic trainer and Vikings cheerleader in the hopes of landing a pro athlete: been there, done that, and she has a young son as proof that football players and fidelity don’t go hand in hand. When Rowan learns her new neighbor is Jensen Lund, the smoking-hot tight end who takes being neighborly to a whole new level, she’s grateful for the team’s strict “no fraternization” policy because the sexy man defines temptation.

This is the fourth book of the series and includes everything you love about a great Lorelei James book--characters, family relationships, good plot tension, banter--oh and yeah its super steamy!

Jeremy Gallow is just another construction worker, and that's the way he likes it. He's left his past behind, but some things cannot be erased. Like the tattoos on his arms that transform into a weapon, or that he was once closer to the Queen of Summer than any half-human should be. Now the half-sidhe all in Summer once feared is dragged back into the world of enchantment, danger, and fickle fae—by a woman who looks uncannily like his dead wife. Her name is Robin, and her secrets are more than enough to get them both killed. A plague has come, the fullborn-fae are dying, and the dark answer to Summer's Court is breaking loose.

This satisfied by 'book recommended by an author' for this year's Pop Sugar reading challenge.  Recommended by Kevin Hearne, I enjoyed this very different take on fae urban fantasy.  It is always an adjustment acclimating to a new author's style.  The plot was creative and I enjoyed the character development plus the building of intrigue.  I'm curious to see where this series goes and will definitely seek out the second book.

As an audiobook, I was less impressed with the narrator and production, having to relisten to entire sections since I 'zoned out' at times.

Angels are falling from the sky in New York, struck down by a vicious, unknown force.

Vampires are dying impossibly of disease.

Guild hunter Elena Deveraux and the Archangel Raphael must discover the source of the wave of death before it engulfs their city and their people, leaving New York a ruin and Raphael’s Tower under siege by enemy archangels.

Archangel's Legion was another great entry to the series. Full of action, intrigue and super hot romance from Elena and Raphael.  It is always amusing that they can find time for togetherness even when NYC is under attack and their whole world seems to be falling apart.

My favorite part was the end, I won't ruin it--but the new surprise visitors will definitely impact future books.

4 out of 4 stars

In the wake of a brutal war, the archangel Raphael and his hunter consort, Elena, are dealing with the treacherously shifting tides of archangelic politics and the people of a battered but not broken city. The last thing their city needs is more death, especially a death that bears the eerie signature of an insane enemy archangel who cannot— should not—be walking the streets.

This hunt must be undertaken with stealth and without alerting their people. It must be handled by those who can become shadows themselves…

Ash is a gifted tracker and a woman cursed with the ability to sense the secrets of anyone she touches. But there’s one man she knows all too well without a single instant of skin contact: Janvier, the dangerously sexy Cajun vampire who has fascinated and infuriated her for years. Now, as they track down a merciless killer, their cat-and-mouse game of flirtation and provocation has turned into a profound one of the heart. And this time, it is Ash’s secret, dark and terrible, that threatens to destroy them both.

I loved this addition to the series following the epic events of Archangel's Legion.  This one fits within the fallout but is essentially a standalone paranormal romance within the Guild Hunters world.  Ash and Janvier have a dynamic relationship which builds nicely, especially since Ash is too afraid to tell him to truth behind her family legacy. I found the mystery/thriller plot engaging as well and loved that the couple showed a bit of diversity.

Kera Watson never expected to face death behind a Los Angeles coffee shop. Not after surviving two tours lugging an M16 around the Middle East. If it wasn’t for her hot Viking customer showing up too late to help, nobody would even see her die.

In uncountable years of service to the Allfather Odin, Ludvig “Vig” Rundstöm has never seen anyone kick ass with quite as much style as Kera. He knows one way to save her life—but she might not like it. Signing up with the Crows will get Kera a new set of battle buddies: cackling, gossiping, squabbling, party-hearty women. With wings. So not the Marines.

But Vig can’t give up on someone as special as Kera. With a storm of oh-crap magic speeding straight for L.A., survival will depend on combining their strengths: Kera’s discipline, Vig’s loyalty… and the Crows’ sheer love of battle. Boy, are they in trouble.

This has been in my 'to-read' pile for eons.  I liked this Norse mythology twist.  Decent characters and plot engagement but it dragged at times.  I'm curious enough to try book 2 but do not need to rush to do so.

Karen Marie Moning returns with the epic conclusion to her pulse-pounding Fever series, where a world thrown into chaos grows more treacherous at every turn. As Mac, Barrons, Ryodan, and Jada struggle to restore control, enemies become allies, right and wrong cease to exist, and the lines between life and death, lust and love, disappear completely.

Black holes loom menacingly over Dublin, threatening to destroy the Earth. Yet the greatest danger is the one MacKayla Lane has unleashed from within: the Sinsar Dubh—a sentient book of unthinkable evil—has possessed her body and will stop at nothing in its insatiable quest for power.

The fate of Man and Fae rests on destroying the book and recovering the long-lost Song of Making, the sole magic that can repair the fragile fabric of the Earth.

SO MUCH HAPPENS! Part of me is glade this phase of the series has come to an end.  Moning wraps up most story arcs well.  I spent a good portion of the book in dire distress for Mac's soul, but she's tough and I had faith that Barrons and the rest of the crew would prevail.  There's some HUGE implications for the next books and I'm extremely looking forward to finally seeing what happens for Dani and Ryodan.

But can we talk for a minute about the soul crushing devastation for the lost of THAT character!!!!  No spoilers but I was wrecked.  Full sobs and heartbreak :(

Feyre has returned to the Spring Court, determined to gather information on Tamlin's manoeuvrings and the invading king threatening to bring Prythian to its knees. But to do so she must play a deadly game of deceit – and one slip may spell doom not only for Feyre, but for her world as well.

As war bears down upon them all, Feyre must decide who to trust amongst the dazzling and lethal High Lords – and hunt for allies in unexpected places.

I loved and adored everything about this third in the series. However, I postponed reading it for months because I was so terrified by what might happen--would Feyre reunite with Rhys? ALL THE FEELS!

I certainly wasn't disappointed!  The lush world building! Character development! Action! Steamy romance! Magic! Betrayals!

So, so, so good!  I need another book!

Ben, Gigi's old boyfriend, must find a way to save his new love after a freak Ultimate Frisbee accident. But will she want to live after she finds out how Ben had to save her?

In this exciting addition to Molly Harper’s beloved Half-Moon Hollow series, the focus is on Gigi’s ex-boyfriend Ben. When his new girlfriend is killed in a freak Ultimate Frisbee accident, he’s determined to save her, no matter the cost, even if it means bringing her into the darkness of vampire life!

Molly Harper is my humor based urban fantasy hero.  I love the comedy, the plots and the romance.  I laughed out loud during this tale--especially since the audio narration was once again done by Amanda Ronconi.  Genuine. Fast paced, sexy and sweet.

For twenty-one-year-old Sydney, being in love with Kyler isn't anything new. They'd been best friends ever since he pushed her down on the playground and she made him eat a mud pie. Somewhere over the years, she fell for him and fell hard. The big problem with that? Kyler puts the 'man' in man-whore. He's never stayed with a girl longer than a few nights, and with it being their last year in college, Syd doesn't want to risk their friendship by declaring her love.

Kyler has always put Syd on a pedestal that was too high for him to reach. To him, she's perfect and she's everything. But the feelings he has for her, he's always hidden away or focused on any other female. After all, Kyler will always be the poor boy from the wrong side of tracks, and Syd will always be the one girl he can never have.

But when they're stranded together at a posh ski resort due to a massive Nor'easter, there's nothing stopping their red-hot feelings for each other from coming to the surface. Can their friendship survive the attraction? Better yet, can they survive at all? Because as the snow falls, someone is stalking them, and this ski trip may be a life-changer in more ways than one.

Again, I'm a sucker for friends to lovers romance. I liked this quick read; however, there was a point where I thought too much was happening. I'd been okay with just the relationship developments and the typical insecurities before the happily ever after.  The development of danger is this mystery/thriller arc just didn't work for me.  I get that it is a vehicle for more character angst, but found it unnecessary.

Ruth Jefferson is a labor and delivery nurse at a Connecticut hospital with more than twenty years' experience. During her shift, Ruth begins a routine checkup on a newborn, only to be told a few minutes later that she's been reassigned to another patient. The parents are white supremacists and don't want Ruth, who is African American, to touch their child. The hospital complies with their request, but the next day, the baby goes into cardiac distress while Ruth is alone in the nursery. Does she obey orders or does she intervene?

This was a book club title and conveniently came at a time when racism is at the forefront of the new in North Carolina and across the country.  I was engaged with the book and the story, mostly frustrated by it all.

I didn't LOVE this book. In fact, I found its praise for the author's exploration of racism rather stereotypical and trite. I felt like it was trying too hard to make a point and actually missed the mark.

Meet Katy Peacock. She has a fun-filled life as colourful as her name, and you can always rely on her to be the life and soul of any party. And it’s a good job too, given she spends her weekends photographing other people’s weddings.

Yet underneath it all, things aren’t so good. Her wedding photography business has fallen on tough times, and she’s had her heart broken more times than she cares to remember.

But she’ll get through it, she knows she will. She just needs to avoid best men, bad men, and ushers of any variety.

I had high hopes for this since it is tagged as a laugh out loud comedy. However, I was bored and couldn't engage at all. Pacing was too slow and was the rare DNF for me.

Sloan will go through hell and back for her little brother. And she does, every single night.

Forced to remain in a relationship with the dangerous and corrupt Asa Jackson, Sloan will do whatever it takes to make sure her brother has what he needs.

Nothing will get in her way.  Nothing except Carter.

Sloan is the only good thing to ever happen to Asa. He knows this and he never plans on letting her go; even if she doesn't approve of his lifestyle. But despite Sloan's disapproval, Asa knows what it takes to get what he wants. He knows what he needs to do to remain on top.

Nothing will get in his way.  Nothing except Carter.

I'm typically a huge Colleen Hoover fan but I supremely disliked this book.  It felt rushed--even though I know it was written in parts on Wattpad.  The entirety of the novel felt like a rough draft.  I couldn't stand any of the character or their behavior.  I'm actually pretty haunted by the sour taste this novel left for me.

Beautiful red-haired and blue-eyed spitfire, Leora, ‘Leo,’ was wooed by her best friend to embark on a girls’ getaway to escape her post-break-up blues for the adventure of a lifetime, leaving the East Coast behind to conquer the Wild West of Wyoming for a week. One ranch run by three stunning Warner brothers, cowboys but not quite.

One almost-cowboy but with the looks of a Viking, Cyrus ‘Cy’ Warner, a grizzly, gruff, and gorgeous man of towering strength and pure ‘Renaissance-sculpted’ muscles was the perfect distraction that Leo did not know she needed.

Danger strikes, threatening to derail to red hot attraction building between Cy and Leo before they have a real chance to explore their feelings. The threat pushes them together yet adds more complications for if what develops might be real.

I love Crownover's writting and ability to create dynamic characters who experience a roller coaster of feelings and situations. I enjoyed this book and look forward to the next of the series.

The terrifying king of hell...

As a boy, Abyssian "Sian" Infernas had his heart shattered by a treacherous fey beauty who died before he could exact vengeance. Millennia later, a curse has transformed him into a demonic monster--just as she's been reincarnated. Sian captures the delicate but bold female, forcing her back to hell.

Meets his match.

Princess Calliope "Lila" Barbot's people have hated and feared Abyssian and his alliance of monsters for eons. When the beastly demon imprisons her in his mystical castle, vowing revenge for betrayals she can't remember, Lila makes her own vow: to bring down the wicked beast for good.

Can two adversaries share one happily-ever-after?

Typically I like the Immortals After Dark series but it is growing rather tiresome.  There wasn't anything special about this book--just more of the same formulaic narrative common to this series and similar books.  I'm ready for something drastic to happen with the Lore for the series to progress.

Read All The Things: Reading Recap Vol 3

After this post I really will be all caught up with reviews. Honestly, I will ;)

The Purloined Poodle is a novella from the brilliant mind of Kevin Hearne.  The story is a hilarious mystery adventure told from the POV of the beloved Oberon, Atticus' wolf hound in the bestselling Iron Druid Chronicles. Upon discovering that a prizewinning poodle has been dogknapped, Oberon feels it is his duty to nab the culprit and save the day. What transpires is a fantastically orchestrated tale of mystery with classic Hearne attention to detail, characterization and humor.

I really enjoyed the story but the best part is the audio by Luke Daniels.  His portrayal of Oberon makes my world just a bit more magical.  I'd love it if he'd come meet my dog and then record an inner dialogue of her musings.

If you haven't read the Iron Druid Chronicles--SERIOUSLY! What are you waiting for?! This story is amazingly amusing and a real treat for fans of the series plus a whole lot of fun for a reader not familiar with the other titles.

Final rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Ivy Morgan is back for this second part of the Wicked trilogy by Jennifer L. Armentrout. Wicked ended with the discovery that Ivy is in fact the halfling Fae the Ancients seek.  It's prophesied that she'll conceive an 'apocalypse baby' that will bring about the destruction of the world.  One bonus is that the union has to be consensual  and Ivy is determined that won't ever happen. However, the Fae are powerful and full of tricks. Ivy world is turned upside down while she struggles with who to tell the truth and just how much she might be willing to sacrifice to save Ren and herself.

I enjoyed this second book. Ivy continues to grow as a character. There were plenty of surprises with just a tad bit of predictability. Overall, good pacing, dialogue and steamy relationship building.  I like Ivy and Ren and especially Tink. I wish the villain had a bit more dimension; however, we'll see what happens in the final book.

Final rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Years ago I discovered the Noble Dead series by Barb & J.C. Hendee.  Once I got into those, I devoured the six book, loving the mix of Lord of the Rings meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  While that adventure came to an end, In Shade and Shadow marks the beginning of a spin-off series with Wynn, the young sage from the previous books.  Having left Magiere and Leesil, she's returned home with text written by ancient vampires; however, these and her personal are whisked away by the elders and Wynn's tales are dismissed as nothing but delusional fantasies.

The texts are far from dismissed as the elders have been sending them out in secret to be copied.  However, a dark force begins to wreak havoc on Sagecraft with the desire to claim these scrolls for itself.  Wynn becomes convinces that the Nobel Dead are responsible for the killings and embarks on a dangerous mission to uncover the truth while also finding a few unexpected allies along the way.

I loved this tale and can't wait to finish out the trilogy.  Wynn is a loveable character and her progression throughout the series is fascinating.  Chane is another complicated character since caring about Wynn is in conflict with his vampire nature.  I look forward to the development of this relationship and what might be in store.

Final rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Death and Wren are back in Death and the Brewmaster's Widow, the second in the Auction Block Mysteries by Loretta Ross. It becomes apparent that the death of Death's (DEETH) firefighter brother is shrouded in mystery. Determined to find answers, the couple return to St. Louis. What they find is more questions and the dubious connection to the Einstadt Brewery where Death's brother met his end.  Sleuthing reveals some pretty shocking news and a nefarious plot to keep some expensive secrets.

This second book was fun and a great mystery romp.  It was maybe a tad more predictable for me as a mystery reader but I found it engaging. I like Wren and Death as a couple and appreciate that each has their vulnerabilities but they work better as a unit.

Amanda Ronconi as audio narrative gives another stellar performance.

Final rating: 4 out of 5 stars

I've been working to catch up on Lorelei James' Blacktop Cowboys series.  Roped In is a novella in the 1001 Dark Nights releases featuring Sutton, a rodeo bulldogger and London, a sassy, gifted horse trainer.  Their paths have crossed before; however, when a life threatening injuring changes his career path, Sutton calls upon London to help train his horse since no longer can. London needs Sutton to make her ex jealous and get vindication at being dumped via text

The outcome is what readers expect from James--fireworks fly with these two from the beginning.  While they agree to work together and give in to temptation it turns out that both are what each other need to feel whole. It is super hot and sexy but charming, funny, and well written.

Wrapped and Strapped is book 7 in the series.  Harlow Pratt is known for her hippy, do-gooder ways; but there is more than meets the eye with this young woman so damaged by a rough upbringing and a past abusive relationship that she finds it difficult to trust. Ranch foreman Hugh Pritchett has past relationship demons of his own with a failed marriage. When they initially meet, the fire is there and they eventually give into temptation but old fears pull them apart.  The ill heath of Harlow's father put forces them to face their feelings and decide if what they have is something to fight for.

I enjoyed this book.  Great characters, angst and pacing with plenty of sexy time.

Final ratings: 4 out of 5 stars

Another series to catch up on is Jennifer L.Armentrout's Wait for You series. The novella Dream of You features hot detective Colton Anders and Abby Erikson.  They knew each other years ago in high school but when Abby witnesses a horrific crime and seems to become a target herself, Colton is determined to catch the criminal and protect Abby at all costs.  Attraction builds and past crushes are revealed. Colton just might be what Abby needs to move on after the death of her husband; however, her own insecurities might derail their romance before it has a chance.

Trust in Me is the alternative POV to book 1, Wait for You. We get to see the relationship from Cam's eyes rather than Avery's.  He's a good guy who although he isn't perfect, it darn well close. He owns his mistakes, atoned for them and became a better person--the perfect person to help Avery come to grips with her past so that they could build a future. I loved it and have a better appreciation for Cam as a character.

Read All the Things - Reading Recap!!! Vol 1

I am woefully behind on my reviews since my new job is keeping me more than busy.  While I haven't been officially posting reviews, I have been reading a lot.  This post is my attempt at catching up, so here we go!!!

Confess, one of Colleen Hoover's I'd been dying to read but never had. Auburn Reed thought she had her life mapped out until her first love tragically dies of cancer.  Skip forward a few years and nothing has worked out as she'd planned; however, she has a goal in mind so that her life gets back on track.  What she doesn't plan for is walking in a Dallas art studio, immediately getting a job and falling for artistic hottie, Owen Gentry. He has some major secrets and he fears the outcome once Auburn learns to truth.  That said, Auburn has some confessions of her own.

What I liked about this book is the whole notion of confessions and how they frame the narrative, both from the main characters confession to each other as well as other character confessions and how Owen's own artwork reflects this theme.  Readers are in for a treat with the additional artistic element of this book.  Don't miss out on nabbing a print copy vs. the audio so that you see the glorious pictures.

Final rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Fallon, a former child star, scarred in a horrible fire, meets aspiring writer, Ben on November 9, just as he swoops in and saves her from yet another uncomfortable outing with her father. She's scheduled a cross-country move for the following day in hopes to rekindle her acting career.  There's an immediate attraction which leads the two to spend her last day in LA together.  Before long, Ben decides to use Fallon and their meeting for the creative inspiration to his novel.  They decide that they'll each meet up on November 9th.

Over time and tribulations, their relationship grows until Fallon begins to suspect that Ben has been less than truthful.  What matters is if they can move past these hurdles to build something long lasting and truthful or if lies will drive them apart.

I enjoyed this one as well but not as much as Confess.  I found myself wanting to shake Fallon and maybe smack her a bit during some of the narrative, the same with Ben; however, that is the mark of good character depictions since I was obviously invested.  I was rather surprised by the twist and enjoyed the ending. What I continue to adore about CoHo is her unique writing perspectives often not explored by other authors.  Also, I loved the character tie-in to Ugly Love, so wasn't expecting that!

Final rating: 4 out of 4 stars

The Marriage Merger is the 4th in the Married to a Billionaire series.  Julietta is a top executive running her successful family business.  She's watcher her family find their true loves, but that doesn't seem to be in the cards for her until she meets Sawyer Wells, the devastatingly handsome and sexy man who lures her out of hiding with an irresistible offer: an exclusive partnership with his international chain of boutique hotels. Julietta will find that she can't pass up the business offer nor that chance as real seduction. Perhaps what neither expected was for each to be the 'one.'

This is a fun and sexy contemporary romance.  There is a little paranormal flair since a spell is supposed to have led Julietta to her ideal man. Engaging characters and good pacing were enough to keep me interested and entertained.

Final rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Julie & Julia is the inspiration for the film released several years ago.  Blogger Julie Powell, faced with a bit of a life crisis endeavored to tackled the classic recipes of Julia Child and blog about these adventures and missteps.  What came out of the process was more than culinary prowess but also an exploration of self awareness, food, friends and family.

I enjoyed the audiobook also narrated by Powell.  This is a great memoir and is very funny.  I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoyed the film as well as readers of Bloggess, Jenny Lawson. There is a similarity in tone and humor.

Final rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Forever With You is the 5th in Armentrout's With You series.  This is Stephanie and Nick's chance at love.  Having just moved to town, Stephanie is instantly attracted to Nick. After their initial hook up, both are eager to try to be friends even if it is uncharted territory. An unexpected secret binds them together, giving them each what they didn't know they wanted until tragedy takes it all away.

Fans of the series won't be disappointed.  Good characters and plot if at times a tad predictable. Definitely good sexy angst.  Highlights include a glimpse into the next book and characters plus cameos from series favs.

Final rating:  4 out of 5 stars

Book 9 of The League explores the story of Dagger. While he might use this name now, others remember him as Tiziran Jullien Eton Anatole the villain we love to hate. Since his banishment, life has been hard but things look up when he meets Tavali Admiral Ushara Altaan, especially when he saves her only son from a kidnapping.

However, in typical Kenyon fashion there aren't any kittens or rainbows until Dagger/Jullien shares his troubled past, finds acceptance in the arms of the woman he loves and comes full circle with his host of inner and outer demons. By the end, he's taken out his enemies, made up with his twin brother Nyk and ready to live life to the fullest and take out the League.

Born of Legend is what I expected but it was way too long, drawn out and was in dire need of an editor.  Much could have been summarized and reworked so that the finished product was far less than 736 pages.  I'll keep on with the series but this wasn't particularly special. I will continue to hold out for Nero's book.

Final rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Betsy the Vampire Queen is back in Undead and Unforgiven.  She's still in charge of Hell and quite frankly having a helluva time figuring things out. Good thing she has her friends and husband to help her out.  Too bad that her father and half sister (aka The Antichrist) have outed vampires to the whole world and now everyone is out to get Betsy. Now our favorite shoe obsessed vampire has to navigate the challenge of being the face of the vampire nation.

Not my favorite book of the series but still fun.  Truthfully, I'm ready for the series to wrap up; I think it is time.  At this point, I look forward to the secondary characters more than Betsy herself.

Final rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Trouble in High Heels follows recent law graduate Brandi Michaels. Having moved to be closer to her fiance, she learns he's been cheating and has eloped with his now pregnant girlfriend to Vegas. Brandi does what any self respecting woman would do, she pawns the ring, goes on a shopping spree, hits the spa and finds a sexy man to distract her.

However, her weekend fling turns out to be her new client, molten hot Count Roberto Bartolini and also suspected jewel thief.  With a mystery afoot and someone aiming to take out Brandi, she'll have to figure out who to trust, solve the case and take another chance on love.

I found this by accident when looking for audiobooks narrated by Amanda Ronconi. It was an enjoyable romantic suspense.

Final rating: 3 out of 5 stars

I chose Down the Rabbit Hole for curiousity and my yearly challenge of reading a book by a celebrity.  I was pleasantly surprised by the book and thought the audio read by Holly Madison was well done.  I always take memoirs with a grain of salt but I tend to believe Madison's account of the Bunny Mansion and the time she served as Girlfield #1 to Hugh Hefner.  Despite the glamorous portrayals on television, there was a dark side to the tale.

I admire Madison's truthfulness and ability to share her experience, especially the dark times as well as what she learned about the industry and herself along the way.

Final rating: 4 out of 5 stars

The yearly reading list also calls for a political memoir and another book about politics in a particular country.  Both not my cup 'o tea, so I improvised.  These two Stephen Colbert entries are unique and hilarious satires.  Definitely check out the audio for these, they are well done and highly entertaining.

REVIEW: Wicked by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Nearly 22 year old Ivy Morgan is far from the typical New Orleans college student. She works for the Order, a group of humans who tasks themselves with ridding the world of dangerous Fae, known for feeding off humans. Despite school and her job, Ivy's closed herself off from most people following the devastating losses of her family and boyfriend and the guild she feels over their deaths.

Something wicked is brewing in New Orleans and Ivy finds herself in the thick of it. Shot by a Fae who wasn't even maimed by iron, she meets devastatingly handsome and charming Ren Owens, 6'3'' of swoon-worthy hotness. Ivy quickly learns that his role within the Order is full of surprises and the war she thought she was fighting holds far more secrets. Now they must work together before time runs out but even on an apocalyptic deadline sometimes passion, lust and a new chance at love can't be denied.

This was my second read of Wicked in anticipation of the release of Torn.  I really enjoyed this book for a multitude of reasons.  I love a good Fae driven urban fantasy. The world building is good, blending just enough of the real NOLA with fantasy elements. NOLA is a character in and of itself.

I love the character dynamics too.  Ivy is a relatable female protagonist.  She certainly isn't perfect but she's kick butt, sassy, smart and vulnerable. Ren is one of those book boyfriends that you'll want to add to the seriously dateable list. The secondary characters are equally well developed. Overall, the plot is engaging and leaves readers wanting more of the action, the witty banter and the super sexy build up between Ivy and Ren.

Final rating: 4.5 out of 5

EXCERPT: I lifted my right hand, reaching for my iron stake out of instinct, even though I knew it would do no good against the prince. “You shouldn’t do that.” His voice was deep with what reminded me of an English accent. “I know you want to, but it would be very, very unwise of you, Ivy.” My hand twitched. Creepy Prince smiled slightly. “Your friend has been very helpful.” That got my hackles up. I slid my sunglasses onto my forehead and forced my tone to stay calm and level. “I’m sure she has. Speaking of Val, happen to know where I can find her?” His lips curled in a semblance of a smile as he stepped closer. The prince was tall, taller than Ren, who was pushing six foot two. My entire back stiffened as I forced myself to hold my ground, even though every instinct demanded that I run and run super fast, because he had almost killed me once before. Correction. He would have definitely killed me if he hadn’t realized what I was and had, I guessed, healed me. “I’ve been waiting for you,” he said, instead of answering my question, his pale blue eyes fixed on mine. My hand curled into a useless fist. “That is extremely creepy to hear.” That cold smile returned. “Why don’t we talk? There are seats across the way.” “Yeah, that’s not going to happen.” The slow smile increased but never reached his eyes. “Oh, I know it is.” Fine hairs rose on my arms. “What exactly can you do right now?” he said in the same coldly polite voice. “Refuse me?” Creepy Prince laughed, and it wasn’t a bad sound. Again, it was something that was just cold, as if he were mimicking what a human would do. “You can’t.” “I can.” My palm itched to grab the thorn stake secured under my pant leg, but I held still. I might be reckless, but I wasn’t stupid. “Really? I will have to beg to differ on that. You see, humans surround us. So many of them, and I have an extraordinary appetite.” His eyes appeared to glimmer as his gaze slithered from the top of my curly head down to my toes. “A rather impressive appetite for many, many things.” “Okay. First off, ew.” My lip curled. “Secondly, I don’t want to hear about any of your appetites.” One dark eyebrow rose. “Oh, but you should know that I could kill twenty of these humans in less than five seconds and feed on the rest, leaving them to believe that it was this little red-headed girl who murdered these innocent people.” His voice dropped even lower as he leaned in and icy air brushed my cheek. “You deny me this, those lives will be on your hands, little bird.” Anger flushed hotly as my eyes met his. There wasn’t a single part of me that doubted anything he said. He had me. God, I hated to admit it, but he had me.

REVIEW: Fall with Me (Wait for You #4) by J. Lynn

Just when I think I've already met my favorite couple in the series I'm surprised by falling in love with new characters. We met Roxy in the last book. A super cool, artistic waitress at Mona's with a definite attraction for hot cop, Reece.  The queen of avoidance, Roxy has spent the better part of a year dodging Reece after one fateful night of misunderstandings but Reese is determined. When events from her past collide with the present, Roxy will have to rely on Reece even if she fears a broken heart.

Charlie, her best friend since birth has been in a long-term care facility since he became a victim of a hate crime 6 years ago and the person who put him in there, Henry, is out of prison and wanting to make amends. Roxy’s not sure she has room for forgiveness in her and when she begins to receive frightening messages and is on the receiving end of escalating violence she's quick to presume Henry's to blame. Reece isn't so sure but he's determine to protect Roxy until they discover who is stalking her and victimizing other young women in the surrounding community.

Roxy is super fun and snarky but her struggle to forgive herself for her role in Charlie's condition is heart-wrenching.  She's equally frustrating with her delay in being truthful with Reece about their previous night together and the fact that super freaky things are happening inside her apartment. Reece is a pretty swoon worthy hero but this is one of those romance novels where I would have liked to have alternating POV and a bit more insight to his thoughts and how he's processing the trauma in his past and his relationship with Roxy.

Loved the angst and the super hot sexy times.  Most of the favorite previous characters make an appearance too.  I adore psychic, stripper Katie and predict some major bombshells for Cam and Avery!

Another outstanding audio narration by Sophie Eastlake (@sereads)!!

Final rating: 5 out of 5 stars

REVIEW: Stay With Me (Wait for You #3) by J. Lynn

Stay with Me is the third in the series and my favorite thus far despite my lukewarm feelings when I read it first in 2014.

Calla, 21, hasn't done a lot of things thanks to a rather rocky childhood which includes surviving a devastating house fire which killed her two younger brothers, ruined her parents marriage, and sent her mother spiraling into a depraved life of drugs and debauchery.  Calla carries these physical and emotional scars with her but keeps secrets from everyone, especially her close circle of college friends. She's determined to finish school and live a happy, successful life in spite of her past.

Her plan is shattered when she discovers her mother has stolen her college money and run up a huge debt in her name.  Forced to return to her small home town, Calla has to clean up her mother's mess, again.  When she arrives at her mother's bar, Mona is AWOL and the place is hopping with sexy ex-soldier Jackson aka Jax James pouring drinks. He gives her a job and makes it perfectly clear that he wants more.

I didn't love Stay with Me the first time I read it. I liked it a lot but there was something missing.  It think that was simply reading the series from the start.  The character building to get to Calla's story had to be established.  I love Calla and all her body issues. She's snarky and intelligent and funny and vulnerable. Jax is the perfect ex-soldier, hottie. He's a natural protector which is what Calla needs but he's also alpha enough to coax her out of her shell and to love her for her.

The romance is believable. The mystery/thriller aspect to the plot is intriguing and the sexy times are super smokin'.

REVIEW: Be With Me (Wait For You #2) by J. Lynn

Be with Me is the second in the Wait for You series and follows Teresa (Tess), Cam's little sister as she falls for his best friend Jace. A survivor of physical abuse, Teresa's life is in transition since a potentially career ending knee injury has derailed her full time dance studies.  Trying to heal, she's beginning college classes and trying to ignore her growing feelings for her brother's best friend.

Jace has some secrets of his own which stunt his ability to commit to anyone for fear of being hurt. What he feels for Teresa is all too real and he has a lot to work out in the emotional department if they're going to have a happy ending.

Besides their romance, the novel centers profoundly around surviving physically abusive relationships.  Teresa got out of one and when she sees that her roommate might be in a similar situation, she speaks up despite a devastating outcome.

I adored this book too. It continues to build upon characters introduced in book 1 and I love that Cam and Avery are back.  I like Teresa and Jace. The attraction is believable as is the smoldering build-up of their relationship. The trials and tribulations are expected for character development.  The pivotal story climax for Teresa had me on the edge of my seat.

All in all a great romantic, sexy book with plenty of heart.  Check out the audiobook read by Sophie Eastlake!

REVIEW: Wait For You (#1) by J. Lynn

Book 1 in the Wait for You series follows Avery Morgansten as she embarks on her freshman year of college in West Virginia. Determined to escape what happened to her at a Halloween party five years ago, she's left Texas and her family behind as well as the constant, degrading bullying from part of her past.  All Avery wants to do is to blend in and make it to classes on time; however, life is anything but predictable.

Enter Cameron at 6'3'' and full of swoon-worthy charm from is dark hair to his striking blue eyes.  He's remarkably charming and seems to be there literally every time Avery turns around.  As their friendship and attraction turns to more, something special might be over before its truly begun. Avery must face her past in order to have the future with Cam they both deserve.

I loved it! There is a realness to the characters and developing relationship.  I love the snark but also the vulnerability of Avery. She's been hurt badly but it growing as a person and is a strong woman. I adore Cam and his approach to breaking down Avery's walls.  It is always nice to have an alpha man character that shows some restraint and isn't quite as in your face annoying as in some books.

Without spoiling too much, I do think Wait for You sends a positive message to rape survivors that meaningful romantic relationships and a successful life are possible in light of such trauma. Avery's journey hasn't been an easy one but she has endured and come out of it stronger.

I really enjoyed the pacing and introduction of other characters. The audiobook narrated by Sophie Eastlake was quite expressive.

Prologue

Dusty, empty shoe boxes, stacked taller and wider than her slim body, wobbled as she pressed her back against them, tucking her bony knees into her chest.
              Breathe. Just Breathe. Breathe.
Wedged in the back of the dingy closet, she didn’t dare make a sound as she sucked her lower lip between her teeth. Focusing on forcing every grimy breath into her lungs, she felt tears well in her eyes.
Oh gosh, she’d made such a big mistake, and Miss Becky was right. She was a bad girl.
She’d reached for the dirty and stained cookie jar earlier, the one shaped like a teddy bear that hid cookies that tasted funny. She wasn’t supposed to get cookies or any food by herself, but she’d just been so hungry that her tummy hurt, and Miss Becky was sick again, napping on the couch. She hadn’t meant to knock the ashtray off the counter, shattering it into tiny pieces. Some were shaped like icicles that clung to the roof during the winter. Others were no bigger than chips.
All she’d wanted was a cookie.
Her slender shoulders jerked at the sound of the all cracking on the other side of the closet. She bit down harder on her lip. A metallic taste burst into her mouth. Tomorrow there would be a hold the size of Mr. Henry’s big hand in the plaster, and Miss Becky would cry and she’d get sick again.
The soft creak of the closet door was like a crack of thunder to her ears.
              Oh no, no, no…
He wasn’t supposed to find her in here. This was her safe place whenever Mr. Henry was angry or when he—
She tensed, eyes peeling wide as a body taller and broader than hers slipped inside and then knelt in front of her. In the dark, she couldn’t make out much of his features, but she knew in her belly and her chest who it was.
              “I’m sorry,” she gasped.
“I know.” A hand settled on her shoulder, the weight reassuring. He was the only person she felt okay with when he touched her. “I need you to stay in here, ‘kay?”
Miss Becky had said once that he was only six months older than her six years, but he always seemed so much bigger, older than her, because in her eyes, he took up her entire world.
              She nodded.
“Don’t come out,” he said, and then he pressed into her hands the redheaded doll she’d dropped in the kitchen after she broke the ashtray and rushed into the closet. Too frightened to retrieve her, she’d left Velvet where she had fallen, and she’d been so upset because the doll had been a gift from him many, many months before. She had no idea how he’d gotten Velvet, but one day he’d simply shown up with her, and she was hers, only hers.
“You stay in here. No matter what.”
Holding the doll close, clenched between her knees and chest, she nodded again.
He shifted, stiffening as an angry shout rattled the walls around them. It was her name that dripped ice down her spine; her name that was shouted so furiously.
A small whimper parted her lips and she whispered, “I just wanted a cookie.”
“It’s okay. Remember? I promised I’d keep you safe forever. Just don’t make a sound.” He squeezed her shoulder. “Just stay quiet, and when I…when I get back, I’ll read to you, ‘kay? All about the stupid rabbit.”
All she could do was nod again, because there had been times when she hadn’t stayed quiet and she’d never forgotten those consequences. But if she stayed quiet, she knew what was coming. He wouldn’t be able to read to her tonight. Tomorrow he would miss school and he wouldn’t be okay even though he would tell her he was.
He lingered for a moment and then he eased out of the closet. The bedroom door shut with a smack, and she lifted the doll, pressing her tearstained face into it. A button on Velvet’s chest poked at her cheek.
              Don’t make a sound.
              Mr. Henry started to yell.
              Don’t make a sound.
              Footsteps punched down the hall.
              Don’t make a sound.
Flesh smacked. Something hit the floor, and Miss Becky must have been feeling better, because she was suddenly shouting, but in the closet the only sound that mattered was the fleshy whack that came over and over. She opened her mouth, screaming silently into the doll.
              Don’t make a sound.
