REVIEW: Intensity by Sherrilyn Kenyon

*Thank you to Netgalley and St. Martin's Griffin for an ARC in exchange for a fair review*

It’s a demon-eat-demon world for Nick Gautier. Just when he thinks he’s finally gotten a handle on how not to take over the world and destroy it, Death returns with an all-star cast that is determined to end the Malachai reign and lineage forever. Worse? Death and War have found the one, true enemy Nick can’t find, and even if he did, it’s one he could never bring himself to banish or kill.

Now framed for murders he hasn’t committed, and surrounded by new friends who might be turncoats, Nick is learning fast how his father went down in flames.

Intensity is the 8th in Kenyon's Chronicles of Nick YA series which connects in large part to her Dark Hunter universe. It remains terribly confusing to explain everything to a non-series reader; however, fans of Kenyon and her ability to map out a spectacularly detailed world and connected characters will enjoy Intensity for its place within the timeline as well as its humor and action.

This novel appears to map a shift in the series and what comes for the future of the Nick Gautier arc for both YA reads and adult fans. We'll just have to wait and see how all of it pans out. The new shift in publication seems to follow his son for now and hopefully undoing a lot of the negative impact Cyprian will have on the whole Dark Hunter universe.

Overall, good pacing but a little confusing at times. Readers will have to stay with it to truly get the point. Some good zingers, tears and a great cliffhanger.

REVIEW: Dragonmark by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Centuries ago, Illarion was betrayed– a dragon made human against his will, then forced to serve humanity as a dragonmount in their army, and to fight for them in wars, hating everything about them. He's enslaved and separated from all family, even forced into a fey realm. Illarion's life will change when he meets his mate; however, lies, betrayal and more loss will plague their lives before they can find a chance at happiness.

I'm torn with Dragonmark. I enjoyed it so much as a good chunk of it is a POV retelling of Dragonbane. I will always admire Kenyon for her creativity and imagination to create such a detailed and connected world of characters; however, the narrative is becoming to complicated and at the same time formulaic.

Illarion is another tortured hero who has faced unimaginable heartache.  Enter the woman who will change all that.

But wait!  Something horrific happens and they're separated :(

Time passes....

Then all is well!

I know this is the format for typical romances but the past few Dark Hunter books lack the umph of earlier titles in the series.  And at least for me, these aren't the page turners that I loved back in the day.  I still love to see appearances by favorite characters but I want a return to more focus.

My complaint is that readers should have to have a chart to keep characters unraveled.  That Dragonmark is #27 of Dark Hunters, #1 in Dragon's Rising, and #5 in the Avalon series is just too confusing.

Read All The Things, Reading Recap, Vol 6

This third book in the Saints of Denver series follows Church and Dixie.

Everyone else in Dixie Carmichael's life has made falling in love look easy, and now she is ready for her own chance at some of that happily ever after. Which means she’s done pining for the moody, silent former soldier who works with her at the bar that's become her home away from home.

Denver has always been just a pit stop for Church on his way back to rural Mississippi. Church finds himself having to get out of Denver fast and back home. He asks Dixie to come with him and she accepts. When Dixie and Church find themselves caught up in a homecoming overshadowed with lies and danger, they both realize that falling in love is easy but making it stick is hard work.
I loved every word that Crownover writes and Riveted was no exception. We've been waiting for Church and Dixie's story for far too long now. Super sexy and engaging with just enough hints of danger and intrigue.  I can't recommend the audiobook enough.

The Operator is the sequel to first in series, The Drafter.
Betrayed by the man she thought she loved and the agency that turned her into the very thing she fought against, Peri abandoned the wealth and privilege of Opti for an anonymous life riddled with memory gaps and self-doubt. But when a highly addictive drug promises to end her dependency on those who’d use her as a tool for their own success, she must choose to either remain broken and vulnerable or return to the above-the-law power and prestige she once left: strong but without will—for whoever holds her next fix, will hold her loyalty.

The narrative of this book is compelling and keeps reader's on their toes.  It is difficult to conceive time travel in most writing; however, Harrison's perspective as well as the abilities pitfalls make for an intriguing read. I like Peri and her band of misfits. It is a challenge to keep track of who to trust and what is real.

Bastien Cabarro survived the brutal slaughter of his entire family only to have his wife pin their murders on him. Made Ravin by The League, he is now a target for their assassins-in-training to hunt and kill. The average life expectancy for such beings is six weeks. But defying the odds is what this Gyron Force officer does best, and Bastien won’t rest until he lays his betrayers in their graves.

Ten years later, he has one chance to balance the scales of justice, provided he relies on his former wingman— the very sister of the woman who testified against him.

Much of this Kenyon book is predictable:

1) Romance (a bit watered down of late)
2) Tortured hero
3) Severe family issues
4) Ongoing war between The League and the rebellion
5) Cameos from other series characters which fit into the growing mythology of the world building

Born of Vengeance wasn't stellar but it is what fans have come to expect of the series and Kenyon's current writing. I feel in a rut when I read this last few publications and wonder if the author doesn't as well. Again, if you are looking to continue the stories already established and want the comfort of Kenyon's style, then pick up this latest title. Final rating: 3 out of 5 stars

For nearly six hundred years, Vlad Tepesh cared for nothing, so he had nothing to lose. His brutal reputation ensured that all but the most foolhardy stayed away. Now falling in love with Leila has put him at the mercy of his passions. And one adversary has found a devastating way to use Vlad’s new bride against him.

A powerful spell links Leila to the necromancer Mircea. If he suffers or dies, so does she. Magic is forbidden to vampires, so Vlad and Leila enlist an unlikely guide as they search for a way to break the spell. But an ancient enemy lies in wait, capable of turning Vlad and Leila’s closest friends against them…and finally tearing the lovers apart forever.

I'm a little sad that the Night Prince series has concluded but it was a great ride.  This book has everything Frost fans love - humor, adventure, action, super-sexytime AND Ian! (who still needs his own book btw!!!!)

The overall plot is strong. Good pacing and character progression plus appearances by series favs. Love the audio by Tavia Gilbert.

Read All the Things - Reading Recap!!! Vol 1

I am woefully behind on my reviews since my new job is keeping me more than busy.  While I haven't been officially posting reviews, I have been reading a lot.  This post is my attempt at catching up, so here we go!!!

Confess, one of Colleen Hoover's I'd been dying to read but never had. Auburn Reed thought she had her life mapped out until her first love tragically dies of cancer.  Skip forward a few years and nothing has worked out as she'd planned; however, she has a goal in mind so that her life gets back on track.  What she doesn't plan for is walking in a Dallas art studio, immediately getting a job and falling for artistic hottie, Owen Gentry. He has some major secrets and he fears the outcome once Auburn learns to truth.  That said, Auburn has some confessions of her own.

What I liked about this book is the whole notion of confessions and how they frame the narrative, both from the main characters confession to each other as well as other character confessions and how Owen's own artwork reflects this theme.  Readers are in for a treat with the additional artistic element of this book.  Don't miss out on nabbing a print copy vs. the audio so that you see the glorious pictures.

Final rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Fallon, a former child star, scarred in a horrible fire, meets aspiring writer, Ben on November 9, just as he swoops in and saves her from yet another uncomfortable outing with her father. She's scheduled a cross-country move for the following day in hopes to rekindle her acting career.  There's an immediate attraction which leads the two to spend her last day in LA together.  Before long, Ben decides to use Fallon and their meeting for the creative inspiration to his novel.  They decide that they'll each meet up on November 9th.

Over time and tribulations, their relationship grows until Fallon begins to suspect that Ben has been less than truthful.  What matters is if they can move past these hurdles to build something long lasting and truthful or if lies will drive them apart.

I enjoyed this one as well but not as much as Confess.  I found myself wanting to shake Fallon and maybe smack her a bit during some of the narrative, the same with Ben; however, that is the mark of good character depictions since I was obviously invested.  I was rather surprised by the twist and enjoyed the ending. What I continue to adore about CoHo is her unique writing perspectives often not explored by other authors.  Also, I loved the character tie-in to Ugly Love, so wasn't expecting that!

Final rating: 4 out of 4 stars

The Marriage Merger is the 4th in the Married to a Billionaire series.  Julietta is a top executive running her successful family business.  She's watcher her family find their true loves, but that doesn't seem to be in the cards for her until she meets Sawyer Wells, the devastatingly handsome and sexy man who lures her out of hiding with an irresistible offer: an exclusive partnership with his international chain of boutique hotels. Julietta will find that she can't pass up the business offer nor that chance as real seduction. Perhaps what neither expected was for each to be the 'one.'

This is a fun and sexy contemporary romance.  There is a little paranormal flair since a spell is supposed to have led Julietta to her ideal man. Engaging characters and good pacing were enough to keep me interested and entertained.

Final rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Julie & Julia is the inspiration for the film released several years ago.  Blogger Julie Powell, faced with a bit of a life crisis endeavored to tackled the classic recipes of Julia Child and blog about these adventures and missteps.  What came out of the process was more than culinary prowess but also an exploration of self awareness, food, friends and family.

I enjoyed the audiobook also narrated by Powell.  This is a great memoir and is very funny.  I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoyed the film as well as readers of Bloggess, Jenny Lawson. There is a similarity in tone and humor.

Final rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Forever With You is the 5th in Armentrout's With You series.  This is Stephanie and Nick's chance at love.  Having just moved to town, Stephanie is instantly attracted to Nick. After their initial hook up, both are eager to try to be friends even if it is uncharted territory. An unexpected secret binds them together, giving them each what they didn't know they wanted until tragedy takes it all away.

Fans of the series won't be disappointed.  Good characters and plot if at times a tad predictable. Definitely good sexy angst.  Highlights include a glimpse into the next book and characters plus cameos from series favs.

Final rating:  4 out of 5 stars

Book 9 of The League explores the story of Dagger. While he might use this name now, others remember him as Tiziran Jullien Eton Anatole the villain we love to hate. Since his banishment, life has been hard but things look up when he meets Tavali Admiral Ushara Altaan, especially when he saves her only son from a kidnapping.

However, in typical Kenyon fashion there aren't any kittens or rainbows until Dagger/Jullien shares his troubled past, finds acceptance in the arms of the woman he loves and comes full circle with his host of inner and outer demons. By the end, he's taken out his enemies, made up with his twin brother Nyk and ready to live life to the fullest and take out the League.

Born of Legend is what I expected but it was way too long, drawn out and was in dire need of an editor.  Much could have been summarized and reworked so that the finished product was far less than 736 pages.  I'll keep on with the series but this wasn't particularly special. I will continue to hold out for Nero's book.

Final rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Betsy the Vampire Queen is back in Undead and Unforgiven.  She's still in charge of Hell and quite frankly having a helluva time figuring things out. Good thing she has her friends and husband to help her out.  Too bad that her father and half sister (aka The Antichrist) have outed vampires to the whole world and now everyone is out to get Betsy. Now our favorite shoe obsessed vampire has to navigate the challenge of being the face of the vampire nation.

Not my favorite book of the series but still fun.  Truthfully, I'm ready for the series to wrap up; I think it is time.  At this point, I look forward to the secondary characters more than Betsy herself.

Final rating: 3 out of 5 stars

Trouble in High Heels follows recent law graduate Brandi Michaels. Having moved to be closer to her fiance, she learns he's been cheating and has eloped with his now pregnant girlfriend to Vegas. Brandi does what any self respecting woman would do, she pawns the ring, goes on a shopping spree, hits the spa and finds a sexy man to distract her.

However, her weekend fling turns out to be her new client, molten hot Count Roberto Bartolini and also suspected jewel thief.  With a mystery afoot and someone aiming to take out Brandi, she'll have to figure out who to trust, solve the case and take another chance on love.

I found this by accident when looking for audiobooks narrated by Amanda Ronconi. It was an enjoyable romantic suspense.

Final rating: 3 out of 5 stars

I chose Down the Rabbit Hole for curiousity and my yearly challenge of reading a book by a celebrity.  I was pleasantly surprised by the book and thought the audio read by Holly Madison was well done.  I always take memoirs with a grain of salt but I tend to believe Madison's account of the Bunny Mansion and the time she served as Girlfield #1 to Hugh Hefner.  Despite the glamorous portrayals on television, there was a dark side to the tale.

I admire Madison's truthfulness and ability to share her experience, especially the dark times as well as what she learned about the industry and herself along the way.

Final rating: 4 out of 5 stars

The yearly reading list also calls for a political memoir and another book about politics in a particular country.  Both not my cup 'o tea, so I improvised.  These two Stephen Colbert entries are unique and hilarious satires.  Definitely check out the audio for these, they are well done and highly entertaining.

REVIEW: Invision by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Nick and company are back in the 7th installment to the Chronicles of Nick series.  Honestly, the premise it notably the same as the others.  Nick is the Malachi, a supremely powerful demon fated to be miserable and destroy the world.  Approached by an alternate adult self, this teenage version of Nick is trying to change his path, not turn evil and steer clear of the legions of baddies who want him dead all while still trying to navigate the perils of being a snarky, hormonal teen boy.

Like pretty much every book of the series readers will encounter:

  • Snarky, humor
  • Nick's sometimes inappropriate hormonal urges
  • Lots of mythology
  • Ancient dark forces with grudges trying to kill Nick and his friends
  • Nick not quite being in control of his powers
  • Flashback that provide insight to other characters
  • Battle wounded warriors who have had crap luck but are survivors and who just might find happiness in the end
  • Simi! - Acheron's demon daughter who loves to eat enemies with plenty of BBQ sauce
  • Cameo's by beloved character from Kenyon's Dark Hunters series
All in all, this was another fun entry in the series.  The audiobook read by Holter Graham was well performed and engaging.  My only criticism remains that for YA appeal, those who began the series have aged out. These will appeal to new readers with the proper marketing. I still wish there were more than one release per year. I'm ready to move past the teen year so the timeline is changed and Nick finally gets his Dark Hunter book.

REVIEW: Born of Betrayal by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Born of Betrayal is almost a companion book to Born of Defiance. Readers finally get Fain Hauk's story and this misunderstood, wounded warrior gets his own chance at redemption and love in Kenyon's traditional style.  Fain hasn't been all that lucky in love following his ill-fated romance with Galene as well as shamefully marrying a human (something just not done in Andarian social circles).  Needless to say Fain's life--like that of Galene and their now adult son, Talyn, hasn't been full of sunshine and rainbows. He too is a social outcast and has faced tortuous harships, even slavery.

Fain, Galene, and Talyn reuinite at a time of military and political crisis.  There is obvious tension and animosity but this dissipates. Learning the truth that he has a son, Fain attempts to connect with Talyn and eventually reunites with Galene. All in all, the plot and character development follow the expected format.

What as interesting about this book was the set up for the next phase of League books including political tensions and the introduction of new characters. This particular book felt very choppy and could have benefited from better editing to help with the flow of the story. I'm still a fan but this isn't the strongest entry to the series.

REVIEW: Dragonbane by Sherrilyn Kenyon

The latest entry in Kenyon's Dark Hunter series; however, also brings together other story arcs, especially Lords of Avalon. I won't harp on the highly complicated--and rather overwhelming--background to the story.  The basic gist is that, Maxis Drago is the mysterious dragon who lives in the attic of Sanctuary.  As it turns out, he's estranged from his mate, Amazon warrior, Seraphina, who pops in unexpectedly needing his help locating their teenage kids. Too bad their existence is a shock to Max, but he is determined to help save them.

What follows is highly complicated but also formulaic for Kenyon's writing.  There are an abundance of characters--some old, some new--, as well as, an intricate mythology and vocabulary of terminology--not always expertly described. As a general fan of the Dark Hunters series, even I was confused at times.  It is bad when I need a chart!  Kenyon really needs to publish an updated volume to the Dark Hunter's Companion.

Max is Kenyon's characteristic wounded warrior.  He's powerful, intelligent, loyal, yet unforgiving. He's been through hell and lived to tell the tale. All the drama and lore behind his role as the Dragonbane was rather confusing.  I think I understand but this is definitely one of those books where I'll have to revisit it again, probably before the follow up is published. Per typical Kenyon, Max and Sera are ill-fated lovers from the start but they are destined to end up together. The turn around for all of the heartache and betrayals is a bit quick but expected. Sera was rather irritating, at least in my opinion--not one of my favorite Kenyon heroines.

I did think it was interesting how events in this book are ultimately setting up for an important series arc.  I look forward to subsequent books to discover the implications of all the twists and turns. Overall, I liked that Max finally got his own book. I remain a fan of the series and am in awe of Kenyon's large scale world-building and character development.

REVIEW: Born of Defiance by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Born of Defiance is a compelling prequel to Kenyon's bestselling League series. Talyn Batur, born an outcast, without the proper family lineage--after all an Andarian without a father is a label no one wants--his many professional accomplishments go unnoticed and he is constantly ridiculed and sabotaged by a commander hell bent to destroy Talyn bit by bit.  Given his station, his only hope for romantic intimacy in any fashion is to contract a paid companion.

Determined to be a doctor, Felicia's only hope of paying for medical school is to enter into the contractual obligation of a paid companion.  She never planned to like Talyn, much less fall in love with him.  When her own troubled family woes entangle Tayln in a plot to overthrow the Andarian crown, he has to make some hard choices concerning his feelings of loyalty, justice and doing what is right.

Believe me, any fan of Kenyon's knows that the plot is much more intricate than my brief summary can surmise.  Needless to say, the events of this book shed light on key events in the series. Furthermore, Talyn Batur is Fain's son and Dancer's nephew. The implications for Born of Betrayal are significant considering that this is Fain's story.  Readers will have to see how this all works out.  It will be lengthy and painful but worthwhile.  Kenyon's tortured warriors usually get a happy ending in time.

REVIEW: Son of No One by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Son of No One is yet another entry into Sherrilyn Kenyon's bestselling Dark Hunters series.  Over 1,000 years ago, Cadegan was banished to a hell realm by Thorn, leader of the Hellchasers.  Utterly abandoned and alone, he has lived in quiet despair as he fights an unending horde of evil creatures.  His life makes a remarkable change following the appearance of Josette, a modern day Cajun divorcee, who just happens to be related to many of our favorite Dark Hunter characters.

Remember in the Dark Hunter world what seems simple can only get more complicated.  Cade and Jo's romance follows a formulaic structure--attraction, acting on attraction, peril, mistrust, doom, reconciliation, happily ever after.  Cade is Kenyon's classic wounded male warrior and Jo is the woman to lead him back into the land of the living.

What's fun about So of No One are all the twists and turns.  The blending of pantheons is pretty intricate.  As are the future implications for the series based on events set in motion and revelations regarding Cadegan's powers and lineage as well as Josette's.  The time of the dragons is here!

I really do like Thorn and he needs a book of his own soon!  A lot of readers favorites make an appearance too! I'm glad to be nearly caught up; all I need now is to get to Dragonbane.  (0:

The body switching part was rather cheesy and very tough to sit through--not one of Kenyon's best writing or editorial moments.  That can NOT happen ever again.

REVIEW: Born of Fury by Sherrilyn Kenyon

FINALLY. Dancer Hauk's book.  Fans of Kenyon's League series have been waiting for this story a long time.  They won't be disappointed.  In true author fashion, Hauk is a classic wounded warrior. Scarred in youth from an accident, he has had to deal with the shame he's brought his aristocratic Andarian family, who pride physical perfection.  Added to that is his pledge to his oldest brother's widow, Dariana, a spiteful woman who strings Hauk along with no plans to enter unification, yet harbors ill will toward him for her husband's death--which she basically caused (but I digress).

Despite all this, Hauk is a snarky and pleasant beast of a man well loved by his chosen Sentella allies and family.  Sure, he looks scary but he's really a big softie.

Romance blossoms when League assassin, Sumi, is sent after Hauk by supreme baddie Kyr--League commander extraordinaire. Sumi has to take out Hauk if she hope to ever see her child again.  Of course, here's when things get complicated. There's a complicated past here namely since Sumi's sister was married to Hauk's brother Faine and that didn't end well. Hauk recognizes Sumi as an assassin and despite some lies, miscommunication and some life threatening enemy attacks, these two hit it off and fall for each other.

Remember, this is a Kenyon book and nothing is ever easy. Loving Sumi is a big no-no but Hauk throws caution to the wind. I won't spoil the details but if you know Kenyon's work, there are plenty of twists and turns but you can probably guess the outcome.

My only fault with the book was a bit of rambling at times.  I think the entire plot could have been tightened a bit to be more concise. As a reader, I always appreciate Kenyon's emphasis on the importance of home and family, but it gets repetitive.

REVIEW ROUNDUP #2: Sherrilyn Kenyon

You know how you have some many series but get behind on new titles?  That's been my problem with the past several releases of Sherrilyn Kenyon.  I adore her as an author but I fell behind with not only the League but also the Dark Hunter and Chronicles of Nick titles.  Therefore, I'm on a mission to catch up.  If you visit my teen blog, you'll find my review for Instinct, book 6 in the C of N YA series.

I've  been revisiting the Dark Hunter universe by finishing Dark Bites, Kenyon's short story collection published in 2014. This is an all-in-one collection of previously availably novellas and other stories plus a few newbies. Some are directly related to the 'verse while others have a strict realistic flare.  Nonetheless, all the titles feature Kenyon's charateristic attention to solid, detail oriented creative writing and distinct characters. There's angst. There's romance. Standouts for me were "Winter Born", "Love Bites", "Until Death Do Us Part", and perhaps my favorite, "House of the Rising Son" which reads as a standalone or as a prequel novella to Styxx.

Final rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

Cloak & Silence is a novela and technically book 7 in the League series. Fans have been waiting for Maris' happily ever after for a while.  Honestly, I was rather disappointed maybe because I expected a more detailed plot. Maris is a fierce warrior but has had to face countless public humiliations since his sexual orientation goes against Phrixian custom.  There had been a big buildup to his story.  I wasn't particularly enamored with his love interest, Ture. I can' quite put my finger on one distinct reason of why I felt let down but part of methinks it is because I kept thinking of the epic story for Qhuinn and Blay in Lover at Last.  J.R. Ward spent years plotting their angsty romance and their book did the complicated romance justice.  Maris' and Ture's relationship just felt like it happened too quickly.

Final rating: 3 out of 5 stars

I'm finishing up the League book 8, Born of Fury.  Look for my review in a few days.

REVIEW: Instinct by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Any reader who follows both Kenyon's Chronicles of Nick and Dark Hunters series knows how impossibly difficult it is to describe the complicated web of stories and characters.  The basic premise is that our beloved, yet epically flawed and tortured Nick Gautier from the Dark Hunters paranormal romance series has set out to manipulate the timeline, saving his mother from an ill fate as well as himself from being essentially evil incarnate aka "The Malachi" and ending the world.

Instinct is book 6 of the this YA series.  Now that young Nick has accepted the demon inside of him, he has to learn how to control his Malachi powers without losing his temper, destorying the world or accidentally hurting his friends.  It is becoming increasingly difficult to judge just who is an ally or enemy.  Just when Nick thinks he might have a "normal" day at school, shennanigans are once again afoot which push him further than ever to protect what he holds most dear.

I listened to the audiobook performed by Holter Graham. He has narrated the rest of the series as well as a good chunck of the Dark Hunter books.  Graham does a fantastic job with story emphasis, distinctive character voices and the ability to bring life to Nick's humor. I highly recommend the audio.

As a long time fan of both series, I am utterly hooked on the story but certainly wish Kenyon would move things along so that Nick can get his Dark Hunter epic we've all been clamoring to have for years.  The waiting certainly makes the anticipation bittersweet.  I found Instinct one of the strongest additions to this YA series.  It has the perfect amount of action, snark and intriguing character development. There are a lot of twists that occur in this novel that will greatly impact the subsequent books. I certainly like this teen Nick more than the broody and broken version of the adult series.  I cannot wait to finally see the transition in character once the YA arc comes to an end.

Final rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
